You may observe the individual or group that you selected at your job or work, at church, at school, or at an event that you have attended or will attend. Events are interesting because they allow you to obtain a close up view of the culture that you are observing. You may draw from past or personal experiences or interactions with a different culture. The purpose of observing an individual or a group is to describe and explain the individual’s or group’s culture. Culture provides the foundation or blueprint of society. It is also the glue that holds society together and culture also provides the foundation of human behavior in society. In observing an individual or a group, please make sure that your paper or writings cover the following bulleted points: • symbols, beliefs, values, special practices, norms, and material goods of the individual or group that is being observed • ethnic, racial, gender, age, religion, and social class of the individual or group that is being observed • cultural elements of the individual or group that serve as important functions for society • contributions of the individual or group’s culture to society • subculture or counterculture elements of the individual’s or group’s culture • culture shock, cultural relativism, and ethnocentrism experiences with the individual’s or group’s culture •Explain which theoretical perspective (structural-functionalist, symbolic- interactionist, conflict, and feminist) can be used to best describe the culture of the individual or group that you selected.
